Day 2


  • What did you do today?

Firstly, we were given a lecture on artificial colourants are made and why/how they are added to food. Next we carried out extraction of artificial colourants from M&M candies. Then, we performed TLC (thin-layer chromatography) on the concentrated colours obtained. Finally, we compared the obtained results to the rF values of base artificial colourants and found out which M&Ms use which colourants.


  • What did you learn today?

I learnt more about the making of artificial colourants and how to extract them safely in the lab. We also learnt how to identify base artificial colourants present in different types of foods with r-f calculations.


  • How do you feel about today's activities?

The activities today were simpler than the ones carried out yesterday. (caffeine extraction) Since we have done chromatography before, this project was carried out very smoothly. i enjoyed these activities as well and look forward to SST having more of these high-level experiments.


  • What new questions do you have regarding the discipline?
Can secondary artificial colourant powders be made? (other than allura red, tartrazine, brilliant blue)
